Learn to Draw and Sketch with Mary Ann Varley
Semi private classes teach you all of the basics and beyond to be able to draw like a pro. Learn shape, shading, perspective, composition, technique, and much more. Class limited 4 to 5 students which allows for one on one instruction. Get the help and guidance that you need when you need it. Adults starting at 16 years and beyond. Lesson plan below for beginners and continuing students
New session begins Wed. March 12th. 8 weeks / Wed. evenings 5 - 7 PM. $220.00 + GST/
- There is a $3.00 charge for paper, and students are expected to have the following supplies.
- 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 sketch book - hardcover, spiral bound is best.
- Drawing pencils (several ranging from H to 6B,
- charcoal, (vine or compressed),
- black and white conte sticks,
- kneaded eraser, pink pearl or vinyl eraser
- small blending stump,
- small watercolour brush size 6 or 8,
- black pilot fine liner.
Lesson 1 Beginners
- explore line and its possibilities - curvy - straight - organic - geometric.
- explore how line leads to shape formation
- explore how to control tonal value through developing the etching stroke
- learn the sighting technique to draw simple objects.

Lesson 1 Continuing students
- explore pure contour line and modified contour line
- leading to expression in drawing
- placement of objects for dramatic composition
Lesson 2 Beginners
- practice etching stroke
- introduction to value scale - highlight and shadow
- more sighting technique - contour line
- elements and principles of design
Lesson 2 Continuing students
- placement of highlight and shadow for various lighting situations
- developing highlights - shadows on fabric, glass and shiny surfaces
Lesson 3 Beginners
- learning to draw the ellipse
- creating symmetry in simple objects
- charcoal drawings of a still life
Lesson 3 Continuing students
- more symmetry using the ellipse
- symmetry in nature - flowers, leaves, and trees
Lesson 4 Beginners
- all types of perspective - overlapping - shading - size
- sighting techniques - colour perspective - atmospheric effects
- linear perspective

- one and two point perspective

- basic facial feature’s proportion
